The Battle of Mogadishu – October 3-4 1993
On Saturday July 29th 2017, at 1:30 pm, the Babylon Junior Senior High School Class of ’77 and the American Airpower Museum honor the men of Task Force Ranger who took part in the battle of Mogadishu in October of 1993.
During the two days of battle, two American UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were shot down in the center of the city. The operation to rescue the crews of both helicopters created an overnight standoff. The Battle concluded the next day, 4 October. In all, nineteen Americans died in the operation, seventy-three were wounded and one helicopter pilot was captured and subsequently released. The story of the battle was made famous by the 1993 movie, Black Hawk Down.
Representing Task Force Ranger will be Gerald Izzo, CWO4 (retired), BHS class of ’77, who was a Black Hawk pilot during the battle. He will relate his battle experiences to a crowd of invited veterans and public. Michelle Dellafave who entertained troops touring with the USO with Bob Hope and Dean Martin, will sing.
The community event, part of the BHS Class of 1977 “Pay It Forward” 40th Reunion Weekend, Black Hawk Down starts at 1:30 pm and is open to the public and free of charge. Veterans are encouraged to attend.

All of us from AAM would like to thank all those who attended our Legends of Airpower Weekend 22-25 May 2015. Crowds were wowed by one of the largest gatherings of WWII Warbirds in the New York Metropolitan Area in years as we honored the 70th Anniversary of the End of WWII in Europe and the Pacific. Our visiting aircraft this year were the Commemorative Air Force who brought their B-29 “FiFi”, B-24 “Diamond Lil'”, SB2C “Helldiver”, P-51 “Mustang” , and C-45 “Expeditor”. Returning for their Annual visit to New York and AAM was the Yankee Air Force and their B-17 “Yankee Lady”. This visiting line up also paired with our collection of WWII aircraft showed off all the major Bombers and Fighters of WWII minus just a few. This summer also marked the return to the air for our Grumman TBM-3E “Avenger” a veteran of the war in the Pacific. Also on display during the weekends event were the awesome WWII Armor and Vehicles from the Museum of American Armor from nearby Bethpage State Park.
We also had the honor of welcoming many WWII veterans to our museum over the weekend. A special tribute was held for a long time friend of the Museum former Lt. Joe O’Grady who was lead bombardier on some of the first missions to Tokyo. We also paid tribute to one of our long time sponsors and supporters WWII 9th AF 362nd FG Veteran Major Eugene Grant.
We weren’t without a little jet noise either as our two L-39s took to the skies showcasing Cold War era aircraft as well. During the course of the weekend we were also entertained by all of the additional aircraft participating in the Jones Beach Air Show that weekend.
Once again we thank everyone who attended for their support and have already started planning next year’s great event!
Thanks to our sponsors – New York Newsday, Chrysler/Jeep of Long Island, Hillside Honda, the Eugene and Emily Grant Foundation, and Cockpit USA.
Special Thanks to Republic Airport, Sheltair FBO, Nassau Flyers, the New York State Parks, and Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
Be sure to stay tuned for upcoming events, and look forward to having everyone back soon!
